James Alan Hetfield (1963– ) was a Southern California outsider who started playing at age 14 and found solace in the music of Aerosmith. Answering an ad by Danish drummer Lars Ulrich led to them forming the thrash metal band Metallica in 1981. They recruited lead guitarist Dave Mustaine through another ad, and Hetfield sang and played rhythm guitar, as well as bass, on their first single. Bassist Cliff Burton joined for their debut, Kill ’Em All (1983). Nine studio albums, two live albums, five consecutive albums debuting at #1, and nine Grammy Awards later, Metallica live on with Kirk Hammett (having replaced Mustaine in 1983) and bassist Robert Trujillo (2003) on board. Metallica (1991) has sold over 22 million worldwide along with Master of Puppets (1986), their acknowledged classic.
